An Evening of (Very) Old Radio

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin.

Written and performed by comedian, broadcast historian and British Comedy Award-winning writer (Miranda, Not Going Out) Paul Kerensa, this one-man show informs, educates and entertains about the origin story of the BBC, radio and life as we know it.

Journey back to the 1920s with tales, clips and re-enactments of landmark moments: the first BBC broadcast, the first children’s show, drama, sports commentary and much more. With a genuine ‘cat’s-whisker’ radio set, gramophone player and 1923 Radio Times, Paul portrays the feuding Marconi employees who kickstarted British broadcasting: the strait-laced first voice of the BBC versus the wild Goon of his day improvising complete on-air Italian operas.

Based on Paul’s 5* podcast The British Broadcasting Century and his novel Auntie and Uncles: The Bizarre Birth of the BBC. “Top comic, top writer.” – LEE MACK

Danbury Parish Council are excited to be working alongside Applause Touring cultivating creativity and connecting communities to bring you an evening of laughter and entertainment.
